Hello,
my name is Brycen Lee and I'm in Ms. Davis's focus class. I'm going to
talk about pine trees. Here's what I've learned so far about pine
trees. Pine
trees are
large, tall trees that are found in mild forests areas.
Pine trees have pine cones that are green and brown . The pine
cones have needle like brindles that really hurt! Pine trees have
no fruit on any part of the tree. The pine cones are divided into two
groups which are Haploxylon and Diploxylon. A pine tree can get a
disease by bark beetles that feed on the pine trees
bark and the bark beetles can kill the whole tree. In the South of
Europe the pine trees wood is used for masts and general carpentry, but
it is chiefly valued for its large edible seeds. The stone
pines may perhaps be native of China, where it is plentiful like
South
Europe. All conifers have there stamens and ovules distinct
inflorences. In the Taxacea these are on separate trees ("dioecious");
but most Araucariacea and all Abietina are "monoecious". Whilst there
is seldom a typical cone among the Taxacea, or the Cupressina. In which
the scales are arranged in alternaqting whorls, the mathematically
exact spirals of the cones of the Abietina are very characteristic.
There are about 35 species of pine trees througout North America, but
there is no telling how many other species there are throughout the
world. the roots of Abietinae do not as a rule extend to any great
depth; but in the Cluster Pine (Pinus Pinaster) and the Stone Pine the
tap root is exceptionally long. Pine trees are different from all the
other trees, because their seeds are uncovered borne in pairs on the
bracts
of cones.
