Math Club

Name of Advisor: Lisa Brown

Description of Activity:
Math Club is for 5th grade students

Date and Time:

Will start in January and is held one day a week from the first bell (8:20) to 8:45.

Purpose of Club:
The mission or purpose of the club is to practice playing a math game called "Witzzle Pro" which helps students become more fluent in math number sense and equations. Students use 3 numbers and any of the operations (add, multiply, subtract or divide) and the order of operations rule to find a target number. A Witzzle Pro tournament will be held in the Spring.

Readers' Rally

Name of Advisor: Carol Ann Chapman

Description of Activities:
Students read selected books; Hold meetings to discuss books and quiz comprehension of facts and events
(4th and 5th Graders are eligible to join the team)

Date and Time:
August to February

Purpose of Club:
Readers' Rally is a reading competition which promotes a love of reading by placing an emphasis on reading comprehension. Britt Elementary sends a team of students to compete against other schools at the Readers' Rally Competition. Both fourth and fifth graders are eligible to join the team. The 2010 Reader's Rally will be held at Berkmar High School on Saturday, February 20, 2010.

Science Club

Name of Advisors: Tom McNeill

Description of Activities:
Hands on science activities

Date and Time:
Tuesdays and Thursdays (alternating between 4th & 5th grades)
Six Weeks, Starting in January

Purpose of Club:
This club targets high achieving 4th and 5th grade students. The purpose is to engage students with inquiry-based hands on science activities that enrich and extend the AKS. Students will use the scientific method to guide their investigations throughout the course of their work.


Chess Club

Name of Advisor: Shannon Davis & Chase Garner

Description of Activities:
Discuss sportsmanship, etiquette, strategy,
legal moves, and basic play
(4th and 5th Grade Only)

Date and Time:
Fridays - Starting in January - 8:20 a.m to 9:00 a.m.

Purpose of Club:
All fourth and fifth grade students are invited to join the Chess Club! This is the second year Britt has offered this unique opportunity. You are welcome to join no matter how much experience you have (or don’t have). We will discuss sportsmanship, etiquette, strategy, legal moves, and basic play.

Chess Club will take place on Fridays, starting in January. Permission slips will be available in December. Permission slips need to be turned in to Shannon Davis. Chess Club meets from 8:20-9:00 in the morning, so you do not have to change how you come to school.



Distinguished Young Gents of Britt

Description of Activities:
4th and 5th Grade Only

Date and Time:
Will be held on Fridays

Purpose of Club:
The Distinguished Young Gents of Britt is a mentoring program for 4th and 5th grade boys at W.C. Britt Elementary School. The purpose of the program is to allow 4th and 5th grade boys the opportunity to promote model citizenship, responsibility, and academics.


Guest Speakers

Description of Activity:
Grades Kindergarten through Fifth Grade are introduced to a variety of special Guest Speakers.
Students are provided the opportunity to explore the AKS in a real-world setting.

 

Spelling Bee

Description of Activity:
Students in grades 4 and 5 participate in Britt Elementary's annual spelling bee each November.
Students compete in classroom spelling bee competitions first.
The winner from each homeroom then participates at our school level spelling bee.
The winner will then advance to the Gwinnett County bee in January.

 

Dr. Seuss' Birthday at South Gwinnett H.S.

Description of Activity:
South Gwinnett High School invites Britt Elementary students over to celebrate Dr. Seuss' Birthday each year.
Our elementary students enjoy a Dr. Seuss story and a variety of Seuss inspired activities. This takes place in early March.

 

Book Fair

Description of Activity:
Twice a year, in the Fall and Spring, the media center hosts the Scholastic Book Fair. Each class visits the book fair where students may purchase items for their reading pleasure. Parents are welcome to attend the two Family Afternoons to shop for selections with their child. These Family Afternoons are usually on Tuesday and Thursday during the week of the Book Fair from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m.

 

Relay For Life

Description of Activity:
Each Spring the Britt Relay for Life Team hosts the Britt Relay for Life Walk-a-Thon. The purpose of Relay for Life and the Britt Walk-a-Thon is to raise money for the American Cancer Society to help fight Cancer through Cancer Research. Students have the opportunity to get sponsors to pledge money for them to walk the track at Britt during their Specials. For raising a certain amount of money, children receive various prizes -- such as Relay for Life certificates, folders, pens, and cups. Every child participates in the Walk-a-Thon, and all participants receive a sticker for walking.


   

Canned Food Drive

Description of Activity:
Mrs. Miller’s fifth grade class sponsors a canned food drive for the Atlanta Community Food Bank each year. Last year, the students organized the collection of more than 1, 290 pounds of food. Students, teachers, and PTA members contributed thirty-five boxes of food to be distributed by the Food Bank. Founded in 1979, the Atlanta Community Food Bank provides food and other donated products to more than 750 nonprofit partner agencies serving Gwinnett County and 37 other counties.
Mrs. Miller’s class would like to thank the administration, the teachers, and
the cafeteria ladies for all their help with the project.
